Lizette fidgeted with her hands as they sat in her lap. She didn’t know why she was suddenly so nervous around Mr. Westcott, but she was. It could have something to do with her inconvenient heart. It made her feel things that she would rather not, especially for a man as contrary as Mr. Westcott.

Perhaps she was just confused since he had saved her on more than one occasion. That must be it. After all, it was preposterous that she was developing feelings for Mr. Westcott. He was far too serious for her.

But he did have a kind heart.

The carriage wheel hit a rut in the cobblestones and dipped to the side. Lizette reached out and steadied herself.

Mr. Westcott spoke up, drawing her attention. “It shouldn’t be much longer until we arrive at Hyde Park.”

“Thank you for suggesting the carriage ride.”

“It wasn’t my idea,” Mr. Westcott said. “Your grandfather thought it would be best if you were seen in public.”

“I see.” Lizette tried to hide her disappointment from Mr. Westcott. How she wished that he wanted to spend time with her and not at her grandfather’s behest.

Mr. Westcott’s eyes roamed over the grand townhouses. “I haven’t been on a carriage ride through Hyde Park since…” His voice stopped. “I don’t think I have ever been on a carriage ride through Hyde Park.”

“Well, I am glad that we are doing this then.”

“As am I,” Mr. Westcott responded. “Hyde Park shouldn’t be too crowded since it isn’t the fashionable hour yet. With any luck, we can be home before our midday meal.”

“Are you in a hurry?”

Mr. Westcott gave her an apologetic smile. “I’m afraid I have a lot of work I need to see to,” he revealed. “It occupies my mind, unceasingly.”

“What do you do for fun?”

“Work is fun for me.”

Lizette cocked her head. “What else?”

“On occasion, I go boxing with Lord Roswell.”

“Anything else?”

Mr. Westcott shook his head. “I have too much work to do, and I don’t have time to lollygag around.”

“Do you not worry that you will get tired of working all the time?”

“People are waiting for me to fail, and I refuse to give them that satisfaction.”

“Are you one of those people?”

Mr. Westcott furrowed his brow. “I suppose so, but I haven’t thought of that before,” he said. “I have so much at stake, and I can’t let anyone down, including myself.”

“You should do one fun thing every day.”

“I don’t have time for games. I am a very busy man.”

Lizette clasped her hands in her lap. “I just worry that you will wake up one day and realize that your life has passed you by.”

“I am not even thirty years old.”

“Precisely, you should be out in Society, enjoying yourself.”

Mr. Westcott grew solemn. “I wasn’t truly accepted into Society until I became Lord Ashington’s heir. Until then, I was merely a blight at social gatherings.” He paused. “Besides, why would I wish to mingle with the same people that watched my brother’s downfall with enjoyment?”

“I doubt that people could be as cold and unfeeling as that.
